On the House side, the famous NY 23 special from last year. I can't say I've followed too many other races with significant Tea Party overtones. That's not to say that there aren't any; I've not been paying as close attention to House races since my access to National Journal got worse (only through a content aggregator, and 3 weeks late). Once my students go forth and write up their reports on, oh, the 30 most competitive races this year, I'll know more. But, yeah, so far, my gut impression is the same as yours, but I'm perfectly willing to admit being wrong on this one.

I don't see this as just a fight over tactics. The COS/Gingrich movement from 1978-1994 was a fight over tactics. Yes, the purists and professionals differ over tactics, but I think they also differ over ideology and strength of ideology. That is, the purists are not only more conservative, but they also are more solely conservative. They don't have other goals. They're also true believers; they actually think their views carry a majority, when the truth is, few groups are a solid majority, and certainly not any ideological groups, because Americans aren't a particularly ideological people.Matt Jarvisnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6926413038778731189.post-26912070244810886342010-09-15T21:27:12.587-05:002010-09-15T21:27:12.587-05:00Just to clarify: privatizing Social Security, Medi...Just to clarify: privatizing Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, Veterans Affairs, deregulating the entire economy sounds wonderful but that simply means going back to the late 19th century. I've seen those Tea Party crowds; I would give them about...oh...2 weeks before they are all dead in the 19th century economy. Survivalists a little longer before the Government of Walmart hunted them down and killed them. That means doing anything at all, even including approving Administration personnel - a large fraction of which remain on GOP holds - will be impossible. So, in the best scenario, nothing at all gets done in the next 2 years after which the electorate has to decide whether the entire government will be privatized or pragmatic action to revive the economy will be the choice. The Tea Partiers are the Solution of 5 year olds.Jimbohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13891331049535299222noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6926413038778731189.post-32625864981512956442010-09-15T12:50:11.729-05:002010-09-15T12:50:11.729-05:00What makes a purist vs a professional? Armey may be a "purist" in a libertarian Republican way, but what about the purity-is-consistency of the Tea Party candidates' actual views? They seem awfully muddled.amberghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08708018101971807502noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6926413038778731189.post-28854945503965781682010-09-15T11:30:44.598-05:002010-09-15T11:30:44.598-05:00J.C.,
