Pawlenty is also recognizing that merely winning the nomination isn't any good to him; he's not a zealot looking for a cross to be nailed to. Stuff like the pledge is general election poison, and divisive within the Republican Party.Tybalthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12609530001755953035noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6926413038778731189.post-78087508807328629752011-07-14T13:53:17.920-05:002011-07-14T13:53:17.920-05:00Couves,

But I don't think he's touched the pledge aspect.

I think both you and Jon are getting it right (with Jon's update). Pawlenty is trying to navigate through the crazy. He's trying to say that he supports all the public policy positions of the social conservatives, but the pledge doubles-down on that with a side of nuts.

I think he'd sign the pledge if it wasn't from VanDerPlaats and didn't have the offensive preamble. He's fine saying he'll do all those things, just without the eugenics and other nonsense.Matt Jarvisnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6926413038778731189.post-71636774735836830892011-07-14T13:05:51.842-05:002011-07-14T13:05:51.842-05:00Jonathan,
There’s merit in your analysis, but you...Jonathan,

There’s merit in your analysis, but you miss a crucial factor -- The language of this pledge is so clearly intolerant and offensive, that it has been an embarrassment to mainstream conservatives, including social conservatives. Pawlenty is walking a tightrope, because he knows the pledge makes a mockery of social conservative positions, yet he can’t say this because he would only draw attention to that fact, thus heightening the embarrassment to the movement. Only Gary Johnson has the guts to call the pledge what it is, intolerant and offensive, because he’s basically written-off social conservatives anyway.

Greghrose, I don’t think Pawlenty has attacked Bachmann or anyone associated with the pledge.Couveshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00926561539205771774noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6926413038778731189.post-14400281201713320902011-07-14T11:44:31.130-05:002011-07-14T11:44:31.130-05:00He may be playing more to 2016, still believing he...He may be playing more to 2016, still believing he'll be the strongest candidate then. It could also explain (in part) why instead of going after Romney he's attacking Bachmann.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
