Santorum, for all his conservative bona fides, also lacks Southern appeal. Newt isn't being backed by any deep pockets, and that leaves Perry as the only guy who can build Southern enthusiasm.

You can point to Perry's dismal showing in Iowa, but we should all honestly accept that no really won that contest. No delegates were awarded, and no one got over 26% of the vote. New Hampshire could also to a three-way split, which would mean no winner there.

As long as a couple of Texas billionaires are willing to toss some bucks at Perry, I expect that he will continue to try. And until someone takes the lead and is clearly the winner, I think they'll continue to back the guy who's done well for them in Texas. Sort of like the lottery, you know? You can't win without a ticket.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6926413038778731189.post-72190367920612268292012-01-06T19:36:23.567-06:002012-01-06T19:36:23.567-06:00My guess is Perry believes, first, that Santorum w...My guess is Perry believes, first, that Santorum will implode quickly, and second that there really is a majority anti-Romney vote and Perry will be the only one left to take advantage of it, assuming Huntsman drops out after New Hampshire.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6926413038778731189.post-16775906783287597102012-01-06T15:50:53.941-06:002012-01-06T15:50:53.941-06:00Maybe Mitt called him up and offered him something...Maybe Mitt called him up and offered him something to stay in.

Or variations on that theme.BrianTHnoreply@blogger.com
