OK: what have they done with Brian Sabean, and who is running the Giants these days? After first taking advantage of free talent including Andres Torres, Juan Uribe, and Pat Burrell (only one a Proven Major League Veteran), and then adding talent through the farm system with Pablo Sandoval and Buster Posey, possessed-by-aliens-Sabean has now pulled off a beautiful maneuver with Bengie Molina. I'm even more happy about this than Steven Rubio is: he's right about the trade, but as far as I can tell the trade justifies the original signing. That is, the Giants had to send someone out there for the first ten weeks of the season, and Molina was a pretty good gamble to be better than whatever free talent was out there -- plus he was apt to be worth more on the trade market. Win-win!
All that said, the team is still in pretty iffy shape...Torres, Uribe and Burrell could all go pumpkin (or in the case of the first two, may already have done so). Sandoval isn't hitting, and with him uncertain and Posey still a rookie, it's not really clear that the Giants are even at league-average at any single position. On the other hand, at least there's no position at which the Giants are clearly below league-average...lots of danger spots, but no clear unambiguous holes. All in all, I can't really complain too much (overall) about Brian Sabean over the last fifteen months or so, and that's a nice change.
