Happy Birthday to George Miller, 67, who was my Member of the House for a couple of years long ago, and one of the last surviving (in Congress, that is) Watergate babies.
And here's the good stuff:
1. Sarah Binder on the origins of the Senate filibuster. I'm certainly not qualified to get involved in this question, so I would just recommend reading Sarah, Greg Koger, and Steve Smith on it (see her post for links). As far as practical questions for now, I think there's broad agreement, however, that (1) the filibuster is constitutional, and that (2) the Senate could use some reform.
2. Good overview of the whole Peter Peterson thing, from Ryan Grim and Paul Blumenthal.
3. Tired of the 2012 cycle? Steve Kornacki is on it: he looks at which Republican Senators may face tough primaries in 2014.
4. And the Monkey Cage, which is reposted at The American Prospect, does a little fundraising for that magazine. The Monkey Cage is also a big part of the Ten Miles Square reposting blog at Washington Monthly, which also takes some of my posts. John Sides says that they would be happy to "If the National Review wanted to syndicate our content, I’d be happy for them to do it. And if the National Review then had similar financial woes, I’d write as post like this one." I would absolutely love to see more conservatives interacting with the political science blogs. You know what would be a great fit? The recently relaunched website of The American Conservative. As regular readers know, I'm a fan of their lineup of bloggers -- Daniel Larison, Noah Millman, and Rod Dreher. I don't know anyone there, and I know nothing about how these sort of things work, but while I can't really imagine NR or some of the other conservative sites hosting the Monkey Cage, I could definitely see TAC doing it.
