Happy Birthday to Carrie Fisher, 57.
Plenty of good stuff for the new week:
1. Seth Masket on top-two.
2. John Sides on primary reform.
3. Robert Costa interviews Ted Cruz.
4. Nice Adam Serwer item about what a mess DHS is.
5. Danny Vinik pushes back against my case for blaming mainstream conservatives for the shutdown; he says the Tea Partiers were at fault.
6. Amanda Hess on privacy and young people.
7. Off my normal track, but: a good series about specialization in high school sports, from Tom FitzGerald. My experience has been that not only is this true and a real shame, but that it's not restricted to sports; at least in Texas, it seems to be common to all extracurriculars.
8. And I don't like Eddie Vedder and I'm partial to APBA, but still, this one.
I've seen the Eddie Vedder/Johnny Ramone picture a couple of times now, and... it's a joke, right? The best guess for the date of the photo is 1984, when Johnny was 35 years old (and Eddie was 19). Does that look like a 35-year-old man to you? And why exactly would an aging punk legend be playing Strat with a random teenager?
ReplyDeleteThe date of the picture is most likely 1995, but it looks like they're playing an older version of the game, one that was published prior to 1987.
DeleteI thought all stat heads preferred Strat-O. (I'm an APBA guy myself, though these days it doesn't get much better than OOTP.)
ReplyDeleteWhat don't you like about Eddie Vedder? The music or the man?
ReplyDeleteAnyone who disagrees that Ted Cruz is an American Hero should read that interview. Classy, refusing to name individuals, but absolutely apportioning blame where it's due, and pointing out that the fainthearts will be held accountable by the voters.
ReplyDelete"[S]hifting the power from the closed rooms in Washington, from the lobbyists and monied interests on K Street, and back to the American people, is the most important fight... Every day, I jump out of bed with a smile on my face, because it is a joy to have the opportunity to stand with the American people and work to help restore people’s faith and optimism in our nation. It’s an incredible honor to play a small role in expanding the American dream.”
It's enough to make you teary-eyed.
