The GOP Repeal Argument, Boiled Down

I've been watching the debate today, on and off, but this one caught my ear. It's Rep. John Shimkus, Republican of Illinois. He started by noting that the Democrats had ten pages of talking points, and then:
What's in here? $500 billion cut to Medicare for our seniors. What else is in here? $500 billion of tax increases. What else is in here? Six years of benefits for ten years of costs. What else is in here? A new entitlement program. Our nation is broke. It is broke because of our entitlement program, and this law added a new entitlement. (My transcription).
Outside of the entirely fraudulent 10/6 lie...is there any logic to that at all? Even a little bit? A tiny, tiny bit?

(And it's not just Shimkus; the GOP line, speaker after speaker, seems to be how horrible it is that Democrats are exploding the deficit, raising taxes, and cutting benefits. Just saw Lee Terry of Nebraska, same thing. And really, the 10/6 lie -- which Republican after Republican is repeating -- is just embarrassing; it's an entirely invented talking point with no foundation in reality).

Ezra Klein's been very good today, by the way, on the this and more (e.g. here).

  1. I'm really loving the theme/design of your blog. Do you ever run into any web browser compatibility problems? A handful of my blog readers have complained about my blog not working correctly in Explorer but looks great in Safari. Do you have any ideas to help fix this problem?
