It is worth noting, by the way, that (at least as far as I know) no Republican has filed for impeachment. (Members of Congress doing it formally, that is -- there's plenty of Impeach Obama stuff out there if you want to pay for it). Yet. I'll take Michele Bachmann, and I'll go with April 15, 2010A month later, I repeated that prediction because impeachment was in the news. So, Jonathan Chait: glad to have you on board! Please leave your prediction for the first formal impeachment resolution (date, Member) in the comments below. Everyone can play! Regular commenters, time to step up. C'mon, I've taken the most obvious Member and a boffo date, but I bet skilled Congress-watchers can pick someone more interesting.

Impeachment Update
Jonathan Chait -- he's great, but obviously new to this whole blogging thing -- noticed today that conservatives want to impeach Barack Obama. He's really, really late to this. Here's what I said on September 12:
I really like the person and date you picked.
ReplyDeleteI could go with Hensarling, but I don't see it. So, I'll go with Ginny Brown-Waite, and the date is Sept 12, 2010. (a kind of Glenn Beck tribute).
Truth be told, I think Bachmann and 4/15 is better.
However, if we're free to pick outside of this Congress, I'll go with Bachmann on day 1 of the next Congress.
Joe Wilson, October 3, 2010. Just in time to ensure his re-election.
ReplyDeleteRon Paul, July 4, 2010.
ReplyDeleteHe'll mumble something about how this administration has acted unconstitutionally, choosing the July 4th date for symbolism...but, as people will have to remind the poor old fella, July 4th is the celebration of our independence and the Declaration. So he'll apologize, retract his impeachment resolution, and wait for September 17th, Constitution Day to renew it- all the while claiming that the "CIA coup" he recently mentioned in a speech to the Campaign for Liberty Conference gave him the faulty intelligence that caused his error.
Paul Broun
ReplyDeleteAugust 12, 2011
Dennis Kucinich, December 3rd 2010 -- the day after he announces that he will contest Obama in a primary for the 2012 nomination.
ReplyDeleteThe first attempt will take place on November 4, and it will come from John McCain. Then one of his staffers will calmly explain to him that senators can't file for impeachment.
ReplyDeleteThe ever-nutty Virginia Foxx (R-NC). Date? I'll take a stab at June 8, 2010.
ReplyDeleteHow about this person, who just won the Democratic primary in the 22nd Texas, Tom Delay's old seat? Her campaign slogan is "Down with the Traitors."
ReplyDeleteYes, she's a LaRouchey.
Her statement on winning the primary: "The victory in the 22nd Congressional District yesterday by LaRouche Democrat Kesha Rogers sent an unmistakable message to the White House, and its British imperial controllers: Your days are numbered."
They do grow 'em crazy in Sugar Land, don't they?
I'll go with Steve King (R-Iowa). He's just as bat-s*** nuts as Bachman. Let's try Jan 20th, 2011.
ReplyDeletei am going with a homer pick, sadly...i see frosh republican and former u.s. attorney of notoriety but little actual accomplishment, other than sending tommy chong to prison, and getting a recluse on home confinement after a plea, mary beth buchanan. january 10 2011
ReplyDeleteAs a Californian, I like Darrell Issa's history of overturning perfectly valid elections. I'll take Issa on a goofy May 29, 2011 (JFK's birthday). By then, the American people will have had more than enough, etc., and President Obama you're no Jack Kennedy, etc. etc.
ReplyDeleteKesha Rogers, February 10, 2011 (My birthday)
ReplyDeleteSomebody above listed Rogers, but didn't give a date. I'm claiming it.
i'll take Louie Gohmert (R-TX). surprised he hadn't been taken yet! lol. the date is harder..um, i'll go with october 4th. just because it's all about politics with these guys, so it has to be close to election time.
ReplyDelete^2010 of course
ReplyDeleteAaron Schock (R-Illinois) arguing along the lines of Marc Thiessen that the President has endangered the country for ending torture of enemy combatants. The date..hmmm I'll go with the obvious sept 11, but 2012 to try and derail re-election.
ReplyDeleteI'll be the contrarian and say that none of them will, barring any significant crime (which I strongly doubt will happen).
ReplyDeleteUpdate -- The following Members (or not) have been selected:
ReplyDeleteBachmann, Brown-Waite, Wilson, Paul, Braun, Kucinich, McCain (my favorite one so far), Foxx, Kesha Rogers, Steve King, Buchanan, Issa, Gohmert, Schock, and Nobody.
Many Members, and even more candidates for the House, are still up for grabs. Don't DeLay!
(Sorry about that one).
Welllllll....I think the most likely perpetrators have already been taken. But since nobody's taken her I call Mean Jean Schmidt. Not until 2011, though. Bonus sub-prediction: if any member of the House files a bill of impeachment, Sarah Palin will implicitly or explicitly endorse it.
ReplyDeleteDave H
Hmm, I'll go with Jean Schmidt exactly one year from today, March 27 2011. I think that will be around the time the tea partiers freak out after realizing that making moderate gains in the midterms didn't lead tyo Obama's resignation and immediate passage of President McCain's bill to privatize social security.
ReplyDeleteMarsha Blackburn - I'll probably be wrong because I think of her as more of a follower than a trend-setter, on Feb 12, 2011.
ReplyDeleteMost likely an unknown backbencher on the Judiciary committee. Hey, that fits my rep, Ted Poe. He's just clueless enough to be convinced to file it on April 19, 2011 (a little shocked no one has picked April 19 yet).
ReplyDeleteAnother update. The following Members (or other people) have been taken:
ReplyDeleteBachmann, Brown-Waite, Wilson, Paul, Braun, Kucinich, McCain (my favorite one so far), Foxx, Kesha Rogers, Steve King, Buchanan, Issa, Gohmert, Schock, Schmidt, Blackburn, Poe, and Nobody.
Bachmann - At the seating of the new congress in January 2011.
ReplyDeleteHas no one said Boehner? I'll take Boehner for $1000 on Jan 4 2011 to win.
ReplyDeleteIf this thing is still open, I'd like to pick Allen West, newby from Fl 22. This guy has stones the size of El Capitan, and seems willing to use them.
ReplyDeleteDate? Anytime after Feb. 2011.
I hope it's not too late -- I'll take Trent Franks, R-AZ, on March 2, 2011.

I win!
