What Mattered This Week?

I don't know yet whether the IRS scandal will turn out to matter, but it certainly could. I wrote about it yesterday...we're certainly going to get investigations and Congressional hearings, at the very least, so I'll go ahead and say it mattered.

And, yeah, I don't really think that this week's Benghazi fuss will turn out to have mattered.

What am I missing? What do you think mattered this week?

  2. The election in Pakistan certainly mattered. As screwed up as that country is, and even though there was some extremist violence, it is still remarkable when a country like that can move forward in embracing democracy.

I'd also say that the epic Heritage meltdown mattered, if only because it shows that there is a major push for immigration reform among some conservative organizations.

Finally it looks like the doctrine of austerity is continuing it's long retreat, especially in Japan.

  3. The "IRS Scandal"? Really?

  4. Could the IRS business have implications for other blatantly political entities that seek tax-exempt status as nonpolitical or at least nonpartisan? Frankly, they exist on both sides.

  5. I wonder if a fair number of individuals and groups involved in the Tea Party movement were already on the IRS radar for involvement with dodgy tax shelters, etc.

After all, the line can be hazy between ideologically principled opposition to the income tax, and just wanting to avoid/evade taxes.

  6. It's not just right-wingers who get audited.

  7. Jason Richwine is sacked by progs (with the assist going to wussy cons) for writing racial heresy while at Harvard. Reason on race takes another blow. Plain Blog favorite Jamelle Bouie writes the perfect brain-dead piece to sum up the liberal view, which contains this key quote:

"Remember, racial groups are imagined communities; there’s nothing biological or genetic that makes someone “black” or “white.”"

Hello, progressives! You can swab your cheek and send it off to several different companies and THEY WILL TELL YOU YOUR RACE BASED ON THE GENES THEREIN! Humans are not immune to evolution, morons.

    1. The biggest difference between talking to religious people about god and progressives about race is that RPs are allowed to address atheistic arguments; progressives are so terrified of saying the wrong thing and being shunned by their herd that they only produce non-sequiters or clam up completely.

    2. If you are mad at Bouie please go comment at his site not here. Also don't call people here "morons."

      Thanks.

    3. If you don't believe that humans are immune to evolution, then I'm not talking about you. The science is settled; a genetic test can delineate whether a cheek swab came from a randomly chosen Japanese, Swiss, or Kenyan. Plain Blog favorite Bouie (and most other progs) lie about this constantly and now the prog machine has harassed another heretic out of a job.

  8. As a white dude who lives in one of the most diverse communities in the country and works with families of all ethnic, racial, whatever backgrounds, I can tell you from personal experience that race does not impact intelligence at all. At all. Period. That guy at Heritage is free to have racist opinions, just like folks can believe that the moon landing was staged and/or that reptilian humanoids secretly rule the world. He shouldn't be surprised when society "demotes" him to the same standing as other crazy, mis-informed or otherwise wrong people.

    1. There is real disagreement on how much of the difference in average intelligence between different races and ethnicities is genetic, but psychometricians agree that there are persistent differences:

I don't know where your denialism comes from.

    2. A Google search for 'iq gap race wiki' is your citation? I would think that someone who is attempting to argue for his own racial superiority would have a slightly more reliable source than that. And the Wikipedia article does not say what you say that it says. Maybe you should go tell the editors there that they are part of the "prog machine". (Good name for a band!)

      race noun (Concise Encyclopedia)

Term once commonly used in physical anthropology to denote a division of humankind possessing traits that are transmissible by descent and sufficient to characterize it as a distinct human type (e.g., Caucasoid, Mongoloid, Negroid). Today the term has little scientific standing, as older methods of differentiation, including hair form and body measurement, have given way to the comparative analysis of DNA and gene frequencies relating to such factors as blood typing, the excretion of amino acids, and inherited enzyme deficiencies. Because all human populations today are extremely similar genetically, most researchers have abandoned the concept of race for the concept of the cline, a graded series of differences occurring along a line of environmental or geographical transition. This reflects the recognition that human populations have always been in a state of flux, with genes constantly flowing from one gene pool to another, impeded only by physical or ecological boundaries. While relative isolation does preserve genetic differences and allow populations to maximally adapt to climatic and disease factors over long periods of time, all groups currently existing are thoroughly “mixed” genetically, and such differences as still exist do not lend themselves to simple typologizing. “Race” is today primarily a sociological designation, identifying a class sharing some outward physical characteristics and some commonalities of culture and history. See also climatic adaptation, ethnic group, racism.

  9. I wonder if/how the IRS scandal will matter. Kevin Drum (and I think some others) have suggested that this gives Congress grounds to dis-allow the IRS to do any scrutiny of "non-profit" groups like Rove's group or OFA. Which of course would further cement the status quo on unlimited "dark money" campaign financing.
