October 6, 1973

The Yom Kippur War began.

Just as one important part of the context of Watergate is the war in Vietnam, an important part of the context of October 1973 is a war which very much took place within the Cold War. The Yom Kippur War isn't just about Israel and its neighbors; it's yet another almost, could-be US/USSR confrontation, with all the nightmarish possibilities that evokes.

Meanwhile, this from Elizabeth Drew:

The Green Book, Washington's social register, was published this week. The Haldemans, the Ehrlichmans, the Deans, the Magruders, and the Stanses have been dropped. A press release accompanying publication of the book said that the changes were the result of "an upheaval in Washington officialdom unprecedented without a change in Administration."

The crisis over Spiro Agnew is still being fought out in public; the president moves closer to confronting the special prosecutor over the tapes.
