Sunday Question for Liberals

So, the Republican convention: ignore it? If so, deliberate counterprogramming, or just whatever you normally watch? Or: Watch and get depressed? Watch and get angry? Watch and laugh? Decide not to watch any of it, but usually find yourself drifting back to it?

  1. Ignore. I'll probably also ignore the Democratic convention. I'm old enough to remember a time when there was occasionally news at a major party convention, but only barely -- and I'm in my 40s.

I don't think there's much reason for anyone, of any any political persuasion, to pay attention to either convention.

  2. Watch TV, follow the convention on my blogreader.

  4. Watch as much as tolerable, like the debates. However much I disagree with the ideas, it's an interesting study in what the other side highlights and how the various ideologies are meshed into a message. At times amusing, at times rage provoking, it still forces me to articulate a response, honing the way I talk about things (if not my thoughts).

    1. that's how I watch conventions too, and why I watch them. What's the message? hard to gage potential action from the convention goings-on, but pretty good for finding out what the message is, what their focus will be for the rest of campaign season.

I spend a lot of time on C-Spans website for this stuff, being that I work weird hours. I imagine it will be much of what we expect, but a few nuggets may emerge that we weren't expecting.

    2. Yeah - I view it as oppo research and strategic background. What are they saying, how ridiculous is it, how will we counter it. There's only going to be an hour of network coverage each night and between work and life I won't get to much more - I'll likely catch key speeches on the interwebs, and of course trust Jon Stewart and the Best F*cking News Team on Television to give me the most critical highlights.

  5. I'll probably skip watching the actual speeches but follow reactions and such on the blogosphere/internet.

    1. Yes, this is likely, too. Andrew Sullivan, Jon Chait, right here, etc.....

  6. Watch, with a Weather Channel splitscreen. Which the cable nets will do for us anyway. Scott and AL Gov have already pulled out. Jindal will have to cancel. Who else does? What do Priebus/Romney do if and when Issac hits LA/MS/AL as a Force 2? Force 3? On the 7th anniversary of Katrina. In 2008, 1,200 miles away in Minneapolis, they canceled the first day because Gustav was making landfall in LA as a Force 2.

The forecast is for a high probability of RNC FUBAR. I'm glued to the broadcast.

  7. I'll watch the Newshour in PBS and whatever other coverage PBS offers.

I don't have cable, and our TV antenna only picks up PBS.

Otherwise, I'll pay attention with blogs such as this one.

  8. Ignore it.

I don't even watch our conventions. Heck, I haven't even seen any Obama's famous speeches.

I really prefer to read rather than watch video. When I watch video it better be comparable to "The Wire" or "30 Rock."

  9. I'll watch it, but with headphones on, music blocking out all the standard stuff I've heard before. I'll keep checking in with Twitter, and when it seems like somebody might have said something interesting, I'll take the headphones off until it starts annoying me again.

This is also how I handled watching the Republican debates without turning into a giant green rage monster.

  10. I'll be interested in the media coverage and how things are conveyed, more than in the speeches themselves. But I probably will watch Romney's speech, and perhaps Christie's speech, to see how they perform and what messages they emphasize. (I'll turn it off if/when I am angered by the lying. There's a good chance that this will happen.)

  11. I don't watch much of it, just what my favorite blogs post as highlights. What I'm really hoping to see is a surreptitious recording of delegates on the floor spewing racist, homophobic, and xenophobic crud against anything non-white, non-Christian, and non-American.

  12. I won't watch any of the GOP convention live. I'll see a few of the more noteworthy moments on news shows and blogs, and that's more than enough for me. For that matter, I probably won't watch very much of the Democratic convention. I'll probably watch Obama's speech, but otherwise I've got better things to do with my time than watch politicians bloviate.

  13. Watch none, just as with the DNC. I have no interest in theater, and other scripted television is better.

I'll find out what happened via news, blogs, and Daily Show.

  14. Ignore it all; anything important that comes from either convention will be summarized in a handful of seconds in the news a month later.
