I Hate When I Agree With Newt About Anything

Yeah, he's right about this:
At a National Review breakfast briefing on Thursday, Gingrich called the RNC’s push for regional primaries and a limited number of primary debates is a “total waste of time.” It’s one of the few parts of the RNC’s post-election report where he disagrees with the party’s recommendations.
The regional primary thing, Newt says, is a waste of time because it's not going to happen. He's right! It's not going to happen; it's also very difficult to see why it's a particularly good thing, even if it was possible.

As far as debates, Newt obviously has a dog in that fight given that his entire campaign basically consisted of insulting debate moderators and knowing that a large chunk of the GOP consists of easy marks who fall for that sort of theatrics. Still he's right: you really don't want to nominate someone who can't handle national televised debates (and you probably do want to give your nominee some practice with it).

Fortunately, in the linked story, Newt then goes on to spout nonsense about Lincoln-Douglas debates and some other stuff. But he's basically correct about the other stuff.

  1. This is surprising, coming from Newt Gingrich...

The more Newt-like statement would be to declare the Republican primary process "fundamentally broken," that he plans to lead an effort to reform it from the ground up, and that his reform will incorporate high technology like social media and the internet, the two next big things for elections.

  2. I agree with Thomas and Newt about social media and the internet. What makes Gingrich a world-historic figure is that he's able to discern that those two factors are closely related and must be dealt with *together.*

  3. Jonathan,

    You'll enjoy this:

Newt Gingrich isn’t ruling out a 2016 presidential run.

“I don’t rule it out, but we’re not spending any energy on it,” Gingrich told reporters this morning at a National Review briefing on Capitol Hill.

    1. I don't think he spent much energy on it last time.
