Read Stuff, You Should

Happy Birthday to Terre Roche, 60.

Right to the good stuff, as I'm glad that I've made it through the first stretch of west coast night games:

1. Larry Bartels on math (don't know that I've ever mentioned it as such, but Bartels is one of the people who you should pretty much always read on every subject).

2. Seth Masket (with Thad Krouser and Eric McGhee): party endorsements in primaries appear to have direct effects on voters.

3. Dean Baker on Social Security disability.

4. One more on Thatcher: Carah Ong has comments from Reagan and Bush administration oral histories about her.

5. And flacks vs. reporters.

1 comment:

  1. There's an interesting quote from Cap Weinberger in those oral histories, when he mentions "cutting taxes" in a list of what was on their political agendas, then says, "It’s hard to realize or recall, but in the years they were coming to power, these things weren’t talked about."

Of course, Proposition 13 - which everyone regards as the first salvo in the tax-cutting revolution - passed in California in 1978, before either Reagan or Thatcher was in power. So even the people who worked with them are capable of succumbing to the mythology.
