I've asked this one before, or at least a variation of it, but now that we're getting to the closing weeks: which Democratic Senate (or House) candidate(s) in a competitive race are you rooting for the most? Or: which Republican Senate (or House) candidate(s) in a competitive race are you rooting against the most?

Scott Brown. He's led an obnoxious campaign and cynically disguises his support from the Right Wing. Also, George Allen.

ReplyDeleteThe problem is, on policy they are all indistinguishable. In the Senate, it's simply a numbers game to get a filibuster proof majority.
Assuming, of course an Obama win.

For: Anne Kuster in NH.

Rooting for Sherrod Brown. A win there will prove 1) a solid progressive can win in a purple state, and 2) Dems can win against an avalanche of outside money.

ReplyDeleteAgainst: Akin, Allen West. Having fewer crazies (TM) in the Congress is always a good thing. If we have to have Republicans in Congress, they might as well live in the 21st century instead of the 19th (although it would be nice to see a return in some respects to the Party of Lincoln).
Akin, West & Bachmann top my 'anti' list.

I'm not as pro-unions as many of my fellow Dems. I'd like for one candidate to be an enviro warrior, but I can't say that any of the current crop have made me think that (though, to be fair, I've had a harder time getting info on non-prez races since my school cancelled our subcription to Hotline, so there could be one out there)
I'll second Anon 2:31 - for Annie Kuster (she's a friend of mine). Among people I don't know, for Elizabeth Warren and Sherrod Brown.
ReplyDeleteAgainst - Josh Mandel strikes me as a pretty loathsome character. And I'd love to see a couple of the Tea Party Mt. Rushmore go down.
I'll third your Anne Kuster and raise you a Carol Shea-Porter. That's mostly anti-Charlie Bass and Frank Guinta, but it has not escaped me that if they both win, our Congressional delegation will be entirely female, which has to be a first in the nation, I'd think. (The Democratic candidate for gov is a woman too.)
DeleteI'm ambivalently rooting for that out Republican House candidate in Massachusetts.
Also -- nobody else eagerly following all the close Senate races out West? It's amazing that ND and AZ are competitive and not much less so for MT. Not a surprise that NV is competitive but it is still an exciting race, if only for those who are curious about incumbency effects of appointed Senators.
I think you're right that NH's possible all-female Congressional delegation would be a first, though Maine is close right now with Snowe and Collins in the Senate, and Chellie Pingree holding one of Maine's two house seats.

Just because their rejection would indicate the voters' rejection of an ideology that has lost its way,failed to accept and deal with its failures, and gone rancid, and the rejection of a coalition that has lost its purpose and ability to govern, I'd like to see Cantor, Ryan and Bachmann lose their seats, along with newer Tea Party crazies like Walsh and West. Won't happen, but, a girl can dream.

ReplyDeleteAside from Elizabeth Warren, I'm rooting for Richard Carmona in AZ, Shelley Berkley in NV, Heidi Heitkamp in ND, and Chris Murphy in CT and rooting against Joe Walsh, Allen West, and Richard Mourdock in tight races. I'm rooting against Eric Cantor, Michelle Bachmann and Paul Ryan as my pipe dreams.
ReplyDeleteFor: Elizabeth Warren--I used to live in MA, and easy racism against Native Americans (as Scott Brown campaign used, regardless of her heritage) has gone on way too long.

Very much For Tammy Baldwin. Partly for the pioneer stuff and also it'd be great to have a liberal senator in a purple Midwestern state.
ReplyDeleteDont have a particular vitriol for her policy preferences (she does kind of come across as Romneyish/etch-a-sketchy on that front), but Im gonna say Linda McMahon just for all the things Ive been hearing about that campaign.
Would love it if you did a Sunday Question like this but about ballot initiatives before the election. I just moved to a state what gots 'em and they are a lot more interesting than candidate elections. And also you don't see as much partisan alignment on them.
Hard to say on the Senate side, but probably Warren, since my sister and dad live in MA and it would be hard to hear Scott Brown's BS for another 6 years. But, from a purely political POV, Sherrod Brown and Tammy Baldwin in equal measure. In general, given the choice, I'd prefer seeing a Dem senator elected in a blue state as opposed to a red state, since such a person is more likely to govern as a liberal. Gotta admit, though, I've got a soft spot for Heidi Hartkamp or whatever her name is...
ReplyDeleteAs for people getting voted out, I'd love to see Steven King of IA go down. I guess I hate Walsh in IL even more, but I'm sorta assuming his goose is already cooked.
Gotta put my 2-cents in here for an Independent, Angus King in Maine.
ReplyDeleteOtherwise, I'd be happy to see Dems win every seat up for grabs in both the House and the Senate. I want a strong Republican Party in this nation; but not a crazy one. As a gardener, I know you have to pull a lot of weeds and thin your crops if you want strong healthy plants. Republicans need some weeding and thinning right now. They've run amok too long.
(Though weeding the entertainment patch -- Limbaugh, & Fox, would also be good. Oh for the Fairness Doctrine! Let's bring it back.)

For me, I want to see the Democrats win in Red states to build as broad a coalition as possible. So pro Tester, Donnelly, Heitkamp, Carmona and McKaskill. Mostly anti Mourdock, Flake, McMahon and Akin and other obviously tea-party Republicans. Really want another strong Democratic year to weed out Tea Party Republicans, which will hopefully lead to their demise and start to weaken their influence on politics.
ReplyDeleteFor me, it's Joe Donnelly against Richard Mourdock. Partly because I live in Indiana, partly because Mourdock is the antithesis of the man (Richard Lugar, whom I do not particularly like, but of whom no one would ever say he was a mean, nasty, lying hypocrite) he beat in the primary.
