Friday Baseball Post

That was fun!

The Giants beat the Cardinals to stay alive. Baseball is, as they say, a funny game; Barry Zito goes 7 2/3 scoreless, somehow or another, and in the best thing ever, drops down a bunt for a hit with two outs and knocks in the 4th run. 5-0 Giants, and back to China Basin for game six.

I don't have much to say...it's postseason. It's a lot of fun. Bruce Bochy, as usual, is doing a fine job; perhaps the key to tonight's game was walking the bases loaded in the second to get to the pitcher with only one out. GIDP, and really, that was pretty much the ballgame, as it turned out.

I've been mostly turning the sound down on the TV and listening to the excellent Giants broadcast crew (out of sync, but it's still worth it -- anyone know if there's a trick to pause the MLB audio feed so I can sync up?). The real fun of the postseason so far has been listening to Mike Krukow. I only get to hear him occasionally; he rarely does radio during the season, so unless the MLB Network picks up the Giants TV feed, I don't get to hear him. I mostly think of him as just a fun guy in the booth, plus an unusual ability to pass along what it feels like to be a player. But this week and last week he's been an outstanding guide to all things pitching. Just really terrific, in my view.

The odd part is that I have no idea what the Fox crew have been yammering about. Not that I miss it. I've watched bits and pieces of the pregame and postgame coverage on MLB, but not too much. So pretty much my point of view through the series has been through the Giants broadcast team, which tends to be pretty calm and matter-of-fact, to tell the truth.

Anyway, the season is still alive. I don't know about the rest of you, but I can use the off day.

  1. I do the same thing you do with the audio, but it works properly for me. The problem in the Bay Area is that KNBR is ahead of the TV, and you can't pause the radio, so you're screwed. My hack is to listen to KNBR via MLB At Bat. THAT audio is behind the TV, and the TV has a DVR I can pause/ff. So after a little finagling, I get a decent sync (although I often have to readjust a bit after a commercial break).

    1. Yeah, I'm listening to KNBR through MLB.com, but my version of it is ahead of the TV. I suspect it's a consequence of using Dish and not cable on the TV, but I don't know; it used to be that the TV was about 30 seconds ahead, so it was just a matter of pausing the TV. My memory is that the audio stream used to have a pause button but that they took it away a few years ago. Oh well.

  2. Giants and Tigers have never met in the World Series. Not yet, anyway!

    1. Let's see...the Giants have played the A's, Red Sox, White Sox, Yankees, Senators/Twins, and Indians...but not the Tigers or Browns/Orioles. Also the Giants have played both of the AL first expansion teams.

The Tigers have played the Cardinals, Pirates, Cubs, Reds, and that's it of the originals -- they've played the Cubs a freakish number of times. Only other one is the Padres.

The Cardinals have played the Yankees, A's, Browns/Orioles, Red Sox, Tigers, and Senators/Twins, but not the White Sox or Indians. Plus one of the 1961 and both of the 1969 expansions.

  3. The first World Series I paid attention to was in 1968 between the Tigers and the Cardinals. But a Giants/Tigers series would be ok as well.

  5. Kruk has, indeed, been amazing this postseason. I've been noticing in particular his attention to Posey's game-calling skills, which Kruk praises.
